  About Me

Hi, my name as I am referred to is "Miss Melba" and I am a 55 year young, retiree from 1974 in child care. I started out in High School Day Care Center Internship under the direction of our Homemaking Department Director for two years. After a successful two years studying Early Childhood Education at the High School Level I decided to take it further at Graduation and entered SHSU at Huntsville, TX and received my Associates Degree in Early Childhood Edu. 1 1/2 years later. I was so proud to cross that stage for it had been a long haul for me just the Christmas before I graduated for I had just lost my father suddenly who never thought I wanted to be a college student at all. It was a surprise to all and I was so proud for I had worked from DAY # 1 and had not one penny to owe anyone. What a relief. The Degree was all mine and the Lords'. Since then, I have still continued to work hard at whatever the Lord has me do. I have experienced three years with a pre-school as their Infant and Kreepers Director. The infants were six-weeks old when they came to us and I was in charge of overseeing and directing their individual care and as I usually did, jumping right in there and helping out in the daily routine of things, i. e., feeding, changing, bathtime, playtime, rockingtime, medicine (I was the Certified Med. Tech. ), you name it and I was handy. And I loved every minute. To watch children grow and learn is a joy. But, God moved me to higher levels in two years. Two years down the road I was offered a position with a Baptist Organization to work as a Social Worker/Group Home House Parent to twelve children. Six boys and six girls to be exact. WOW, what a "CALLING. " But called I was and away I went. It was marvelous. Don't get me wrong. We had challenges like any parent or babysitter or nanny would or will have with a child on occassions but on a whole God Blessed every day. The children grew, learned to communicate with each other, learned their chores, did their homework, ate their meals, had time to play and date, went to bed on time and was up the next in a good mood. And you know what? It wasn't all me. It was everybody working together. I did that type of work in two Residential Child Care Facilities until I finally retired in April of 2003. In May of the same year I went back to college. At Houston Community College at the end of 2005 I received my Associates Degree in Fashion Design. This had been something I had my eye on for some years but it was just a dream but now had finally come true. For years I sewed, mended, altered, knitted, embroidered, crocheted, quilted and numerous other hand crafts for gifts but I always dreamed of being able to sell some of the bigger items and maybe become an alteration specialist on the side some day for fun when I had the time. Well, here I am. maybe down the road sometime. Won't never say "NO. " I enjoy living life to the fullest with what the Lord has given me. I have been so blessed. I still have my mother here in Palestine and one sister a few years older than me in Burkeville. I have one niece who will be eighteen next December, she lost her mother two years ago in December (the day after her birthday). After seeing the shoes my neice puts on every day, I don't have any problems at all. Yes, I am richly blessed. May God Bless You as you make your decisions.... Melba P.

Sylvia D. Crane
I met Ms. Sylvia Crane in August of 1991 as I was employed with Boy's & Girl's Harbor, Inc. in La Porte, TX. She was at the present time the Social Worker for the Residential Childrens Home. Not only did she over-see my work as the "Host Family Co-Ordinator" and "Relief House Parent", I quickly became acquainted with her two toddling girls (6 mos. and 1 1/2 yrs. ) who desperately needed a second pair of warm arms on some long nights sometimes. We four became close friends pretty quick and I soon held the title of "Auntie M. " where ever we went and you know, still today both girls in their twenties still call me every day and ask how "Auntie M. " is feeling. It just makes you so proud to see how far they've come you just want to stand up and shout... Thank You Sylvia Crane for sharing your girls with me. You three are a wonderful part of my life... LOL
