I have been working with underprivileged kids since I was 9. My mother, having came to America from a poorer part of Colombia thought it was important for me to learn empathy and gratitude at a young age. She had me travel every year, to give away all of the clothes that didn't fit me to orphanages and the kids that sadly, lived in the street. At the age of 12, she couldn't support for both of us to go anymore, so I started going alone. This is the year I started helping take care of the younger children, and cleaning. By 16 I was working as a counselor. I spoke to child rape victims and children who had lost their families. I was a friend.
I kept going back to Colombia every year until I turned 18. I had saved enough money from working a few neighborhood babysitting jobs (and an actual job at a restaurant) to pay for a ticket to Nepal, where I worked with more children. I worked at a Himalayan School, teaching English, and simple math. A couple of days out of the week, I went to an orphanage and helped cook, clean and watch the children.
After a year of college, my love for traveling and children, caused me to stumble upon a job opportunity in the Swiss Alps, at an International Boarding School. I worked 12 hours a day, watching the teachers' children, cooking, cleaning. There hatched another passion of mine; Gardening. Wow I love gardening. I also had the opportunity to assist teach yoga to the younger students. After working there for some months, the rigorous working hours and the fact that I was stranded on the side of a mountain got to me, and I had to leave. I couldn't come back to America without traveling, so for 6 months I traveled through Europe.
I worked as an Au Pair in France for a tiny Family in the farmlands. They had a 9 month old daughter that I watched everyday for a month. In Italy I helped a family with 2 very energetic boys ages 6 and 8. I did a lot more while traveling, including working on farms, and joining meditation retreats.
Yes, I have watched neighborhood children. I have even worked for care. com and stayed with a family for 4 months. She was 9. But I don't feel it captures the essence of my true passion. Children are growing minds. They aren't stupid. They understand love, empathy, community. They ARE the future. It saddens me to no end to see so many children these days staring at their phones, or watching TV.
Hiring me as a caretaker is more than hiring someone to make sure your kids stay alive while you're at work. I love watching people learn. grow. I want to spark curiosity in young minds. I love that face a child makes when something finally makes sense to them.
I feel like I have said too much in this About me section.
I recently got back from my travels so my schedule is completely free.
Message me if you have any questions.
With much love and good energy,
-Amanda |
