  About Me

I always knew I wanted to be a Nanny.
I was raised in a small, rural town in South Dakota. While the town was small, my family was big. I had incredible parents who are best known for adopting five children, and taking in more than 30 foster children during the past 15+ years. I am their only biological child. There were always children of all ages in the house -- especially when my mom began running an in-home daycare center. Between caring for my brothers and sisters and being invited home to care for the children in my mother’s daycare, I quickly earned the reputation as the town babysitter.
In 1999 my eldest sister welcomed twin daughters and invited me to join her in Virginia for the summer and provide her with much needed help. I had the time of my life. I adored working with my nieces and learned quickly how much fun multiples can be. It was also a fabulous time to learn that working with newborns could very easily become my niche. Helping my nieces get on a sleep and feeding schedule seemed to come naturally to me and I knew more than ever, I wanted a career working with children.
After three months with my nieces (my sister had gone back to work when the babies were six weeks old), I went back to South Dakota, finished high school and immediately relocated to Oregon where I began classes at Northwest Nannies Institute. The classes came very naturally to me and I especially enjoyed the child development and family dynamic classes. I received my certificate as a certified professional nanny in December 2002.
Upon graduation, a family in Santa Fe NM immediately hired me as their live in Nanny. Looking back, I see it as the perfect first position as a professional nanny. As a live-in-nanny, I worked with a six month old and two- and-a-half old boy. I put all of my energy into providing them with much needed stability and creating a routine. We traveled regularly to destinations all over the country and I quickly became a member of the family.
After twelve months with the family I met my husband and found very little time to get to know him and a build a relationship. The family encouraged me to nurture a relationship with my husband and after 18 months as a live-in-nanny I knew I was now seeking a live out position.
In August 2004 I accepted a position with a six-month-old baby girl. It was a dream position with a terrific family. Once again I set up a routine, enrolled their infant in educational classes, and established a solid relationship with the family. The mother was a physician with a rotating schedule so I was only needed two weeks per month. In order to gain additional financial support, my employers referred me to a friend who was looking for overnight care of her twins. I was definitely intrigued. I accepted the opportunity not realizing at the time, I was making a career decision.
I used the same philosophy with overnight care I did as a daytime nanny. I quickly got to know the babies’ limits and how long they could go without a feeding. This allowed me to train them when they should sleep and when they could get up to eat. My method was a success and the twins were sleeping through the night within three months. The family immediately referred me to a friend and I steadily began overnight care while continuing to love my job as a full- time, live-out nanny.
In February 2006 my husband was offered a position in Alexandria, VA and we were both excited at the opportunity to experience a new part of the country. I talked over my husband’s decision to accept the position in Virginia with my employers, and they informed me they were once again expecting a baby. Everything just seemed to be falling into place. I made arrangements to stay on as their nanny until the baby was born, then relocated to Alexandria VA.
Prior to relocating to the Washington, DC metro area, I began my search for a nanny position and accepted a job with a family due to have their first daughter in June 2006. Initially their intentions were to have me begin as their full-time nanny in July; however, after learning about my success as a sleep trainer, they decided to have me start as their daughter overnight immediately. I began overnights mid-June and by mid-July their daughter was maintaining seven to eight hours of consistent sleep a night. In mid-July, I transitioned into a daytime schedule of 7:30 a. m. to 5:30 p. m. and immediately began missing my overnight sleep training work. Overnights were definitely a new challenge, and I learned quickly that no overnight was every the same. This made it very exciting.
Being young and energetic, there was never a question whether I could maintain my full- time day schedule and also my passion as an overnight sleep trainer. Therefore, I continued my work as an overnight sleep trainer and began with twin girls in August 2007. The twins were already seven weeks old. The position was available after their current newborn care provider was unable to get the girls into a routine and was found to be using methods the family didn’t agree with. I continued with the family until October, when I began with a set of twin boys. To add a bit of a twist to my sleep training with the boys, I worked out an arrangement to bring in a dear friend of mine, who was also a professional nanny, interested in learning about sleep training. My friend caught on immediately and used my method to great success. Because the experience was such huge success; my husband and I made the decision to begin a company and offer newborn sleep training. The business quickly gained a positive reputation and grew faster than we expected.
While continuing to train o professional Nannies the art of overnight sleep training, I also continued to work overnight, as I truly loved my work in the overnight hours. My experience even included training a set of triplets in four months time.
During the past five years, I have had the privilege of working with 11 families as an overnight sleep trainer, including one family who hired me to train their daughter in 2006 and their other daughter in 2008. Due to my success in sleep training I have met with various families as a consultant so they could gain knowledge in caring for their new bundles of joy. I have also worked with even more families in the capacity of an evening or weekend childcare provider.
As I move onto the next great adventure with my husband in New Mexico, I plan to bring the same enthusiasm and passion for my work as a full-time nanny and overnight sleep specialist. The knowledge I learned during my time in Virginia is invaluable and will be a great asset as I establish my new business in the Albuquerque area. I am excited about what the future holds and look forward to working with a new family.
